4 Easy Ways To Save Money On Your Wedding Cake Cost

March 2, 2010 by Jonelle
Filed under General, Wedding Reception Ideas

According to the Bridal Association of America, the cost of an average wedding rose 11.37% from June 2006 to 2009, and 2.37% of this increase was directly attributed to wedding cake prices.

The average wedding cake cost in 2009 was $534.  This may seem like a drop in the bucket compared to the average wedding cost of $30,860, but if you are really trying to plan your perfect wedding on a budget, there are several ways to cut your wedding cake price by several hundred dollars.  On the other hand, if you have money to burn the wedding cake industry will be more than happy to fuel the fire for you.

Here are 4 ways you can save $$$$ on your wedding cake costs!!

  • DO YOUR HOMEWORK!  Take the time to shop around for a cake decorator in your area. There are many many experienced cake decorators who don’t work in bakeries or operated high priced store fronts.  Before you start your wedding cake price shopping you should have a good idea of the flavor of cake you want, the them of your wedding cake, and how many guests you will be serving.

1) Check out the classified section of your local newspaper for cake decorators. They usually charge less due to the fact they don’t have high overhead to pay, plus many are stay at home moms who have fantastic talents and are only trying to earn an additional income.

2) Ask your friends!  This is a great resource because your friend may have a friend who has a cousin, etc. that has the name of a great inexpensive wedding cake decorator.

3) Call every bakery and cake decorating service in your local phone book.  You’ll be amazed at the price differences you’ll find from one shop to the next in many regions of the country.

  • Order a small wedding cakes to serve to the wedding party accompanied by large sheet cakes to serve to your guests. The sheet cakes do not require the time and cost of decorating, so are a huge cost savings.  You can also order the small wedding cakes for your wedding party accompanied by a tiered cupcake tray for your guests.  This is a concept that has really taken off.  The tiered cupcakes give a real “Wow” factor without the “Wow” cost!!
  • Decorate and make your own wedding cake with storebought cakes and your own ribbons, flowers, etc. You can build your own 3 tiered wedding cake by purchasing various sizes of round cakes at your local bakery or grocery store (maybe 12″ round, an 8″ round and a 6″ round), and with a few additional accessories (dowels and cardboard cake separators) purchased at a craft store or cooking supply store, you can create your own tiered wedding cake. Wedding Cake Decorators will charge you an arm and a leg for placing flowers on your wedding cake, but you can accomplish the same effect for free!

If you’re having a spring or summer wedding you can decorate it with flowers from your own garden, along with ribbons from a craft store. Here’s a great website that shows you how to stack your own tiered wedding cake the right way:  “How To Stack Cake Tiers”. You can even add your own special touches by printing a picture of yourselves (the happy couple), trimming it in ribbon and adding it to one of the cake layers in  lieu of a cake topper.  There are numerous ideas of how you can pull off your perfect wedding cake without the average “wedding cake cost” with a few simple add ons that won’t cost you very much.

  • Have one of your friends or relatives make your wedding cake for you! We all have people in our lives who are great cullinaries in the baking world.  They make their own kids birthday cakes that you’d swear they paid someone else to make. Their desserts are the highlight of every holiday and dinner party.  Maybe they’ve never tackled a wedding cake, but with a little guidance and instruction you know they could do it.  You pay for their cost and they provide their expertise.

Here’s a really great book you can purchase as a gift for your wedding cake making friends to guide them through the process.  It’s a simple step-by-step book on Wedding Cakes You Can Make: Designing, Baking, and Decorating the Perfect Wedding Cake 4 Easy Ways To Save Money On Your Wedding Cake Cost.  It also makes a great gift for your friend or family member who is helping you out with your wedding cake cost. It’s really a win-win!  Your friends (or relatives) will be honored and take great pride that you have asked them to make the wedding cake…and you save on your wedding cake cost.  Make sure to let your raving guests know who made the cake to give your friend the Kuodos they deserve for undertaking such a special part of your wedding planning.

Inexpensive wedding cakes don’t necessarily correlate to “cheap wedding cakes” if you do it right.  Don’t get ripped off by your wedding venue, wedding caterer, or wedding planner with higher than necessary wedding cake prices.  These are 4 great wedding budget tips to have cheap wedding cakes that look like a million bucks.

(A disclaimer:  if you decide to purchase “Wedding Cakes You Can Make” I will make a small referral fee.  The price will no be any higher if you purchase through my link…but I’m required to let you know that I will make a few cents on any purchases made through my link)

Wedding Budget Do’s And Don’ts – Cost Savings On Alcohol At The Reception

March 1, 2010 by Jonelle
Filed under General, Wedding Reception Ideas

When it comes to whether or not to serve alcohol at the wedding reception, or what type of alcohol to serve, there is no real wedding etiquette.   This is your wedding and your reception and whatever you chose to do is proper and acceptable.  Only you know your wedding budget and your wedding guests, so only you can determine if you’re going to serve alcohol and if so what alcohol you’re going to serve.

One of every bride and grooms biggest fears and unknowns is, “how much is the alcohol going to cost for the reception?”.  If you opt to have a hosted bar at your wedding (one where you pay for the alcohol for a certain period of time or a certain dollar amount), it can get pretty pricey.  A hosted open-bar concept with either top shelf  / medium shelf liquor can be a real wedding budget buster!

Some couples feel like they’re hosting a cheap wedding if they inform their guests that they’re having a cash only bar.  They’re embarrassed to have to tell their guests to make sure and bring plenty of cash to the wedding (which is essential to do if you are planning on a cash only bar).

A great budget wedding alternative for many couples is to serve only beer and wine, or beer and wine with your own signature drink.  You can even use your signature drink for the couples toast in lieu of champagne.  A signature drink can be anything you want it to be.  It can be the couple’s favorite drink or a drink representing one of your favorite vacation spots such as a Mexico Margarita or a Hawaiian Sunset drink.

If you chose to go with a signature drink, make sure to ask the venue or the catering service how much they will be charging per drink so you can determine if you want to set a time limit or budget limit.  Ask them to offer you more cost affordable signature options if the one y0u’ve chosen is too expensive.

Having your venue/caterer serve their house wine rather than top shelf stuff is also one of our favorite inexpensive wedding ideas.  You don’t have to go with the very very best, as many house wines are sometimes preferred by many connoisseurs of wine.

In addition to your wine/beer/signature drink you could also have a cash bar for those who prefer.  So the beer/wine/signature drink reception provides a cheap wedding ideas alternative to an open hosted bar or a cash only bar.

One more budget wedding idea for the reception is to have your guests do the toast with whatever they happen to be drinking at the time.  Depending on which champagnes your venue or caterer offers, this can be a real cost savings.  There is no rule that says the toast has to be done with champagne.

Oh, and whether  you do decide to serve alcohol or not, make sure to have nonalcoholic beverages available for your younger guests and guests  that don’t drink.  You should consider providing coffee, a non-alcoholic punch and/or soda at the very least.

Make Your Own Wedding Flower Decorations

October 11, 2009 by Jonelle
Filed under General, Wedding Flower Decorations

Hiring a florist or a wedding planner to make your wedding flower decorations and wedding reception centerpieces can get very expensive.  Maybe you’re one of those people who has seen beautiful centerpieces or bridal bouquets in bridal magazines or at a wedding  and thought to yourself  “I think I could do that”.  Or maybe you have a friend or family member who is creative and wants to help you with your wedding plans and your wedding budget.  If that’s the case, then one real budget saver is to do your own wedding flowers.

The key to homemade wedding floral arrangements and wedding floral centerpieces that look professional is lots of planning, preparation, and practice.  You’ll be trading your time for your money, but in the end the savings will amount to hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars.

Here’s a list of things to keep in mind for your wedding flower ideas.

  • Gather And Organize Your Ideas: If you already have a wedding planner, then be sure to create a section specifically for your wedding flowers and wedding centerpiece ideas.  If you don’t have a planner then purchase a folder or a binder and start collecting your ideas.  Start off by purchasing wedding and bridal magazines and cut out the pictures of arrangements you like.  Visit your local florists and hotels to get ideas (take your cameras with you).  Your local newspaper probably announces upcoming weddings, so if you know of one being held in a local hotel (usually on Saturdays and Sundays) then just bob into the hotel with your camera and take pictures of the set-up.  No, we’re not asking you to become a professional “wedding crasher”.  You can visit the hotel prior to the actual reception and take pictures of the centerpieces that you like.   Once you’ve collected lots of ideas you can go through them and take pieces and parts of the ones you like and toss the rest.
  • Chose Your Colors:  When you begin to create your own wedding flowers you’ll need to decide on your color scheme.  Most likely you’ve already chosen your bridesmaids dresses and that’s the color scheme you’ll be using.  When chosing your colors you will need to keep in mind also the types of flowers that are available during the season you are getting married.
  • Chose Your Flowers: Once you’ve decided on your color scheme it’s time to start chosing your flowers for the bouquets and centerpieces you’ve chosen.  Keep in mind that there may be many different types of flowers that fit with the color scheme you’ve chosen, and each type of flower can vary greatly in price.  Also, again make sure to check with your local florists to make sure that they’ll be able to get the type of flowers you want during the season of your wedding.  Once you’ve confirmed with the florist what is available, then make your list and start placing your order.  Most florists will let you do this well in advance so that you’ll know for sure your flowers will be there when you need them.
  • Gather And Purchase Additional Supplies:  Make a list of everything you will need for each centerpiece, each bouquet and other areas you may be added flowers (ends of church pews, wedding party table, etc.).  Plan, plan and plan.  For example: if you are going to have 15 reception tables with 15 centerpieces then you will need 15 centerpiece containers, floral foam for each container, ____ of ____ flowers, __ stems of baby’s breath, etc. etc.  When you are preparing homemade wedding flowers you will need to have a set of clippers, floral tapes, floral foams, ribbons, moss, candles,  rose strippers?, etc. for each person that will be assisting in the assembly of the wedding centerpieces and bouquets.  Also, keep in mind that once your flowers are delivered you will need a cool place to store them (ask your florist how cool and how long they can be safely stored).  You’ll also need some very deep/tall vases to keep your flowers in so that they are well supported (usually something 18″-20″ deep).  These can usually be purchased inexpensively at your local home improvement store.  Once you have planned your arrangements, etc. you can start looking for sales and purchase many of the items ahead of time to save some extra money on your wedding flowers.  Store them all in one place to reduce the stress of trying to locate things later when you need them, and remember where you stored them.
  • Practice, Practice, Practice:  Once your flowers have been delivered and you’ve purchased all of your additional supplies, you (or whomever you have chosen to make your wedding flowers) should practice putting together one of each (i.e. one centerpiece, one bouquet, and one of any other floral arrangements you have chosen).  This is also a good time to determine how much time is required to make each floral arrangements and whether you have purchased enough supplies for each arrangement.
  • Make The Plan:  Now that you’ve made all of your decisions, purchased all of your supplies, had the flowers delivered (or picked up) and practiced…all that’s left is to organize everyone that will be assisting with creating the wedding flowers and make sure everyone knows where to be and when to be there.  Also, make a plan for someone to deliver the centerpieces to the reception location and the other flowers to the wedding ceremony venue.  Most likely your family, friends, and bridal party will all be more than happy to pitch in and help you out with all of the organizing, decorating and delivering so that you can focus on other details and yourself.
